The Need for Better Oral Health
Oral diseases are a major health concern in Bangladesh, affecting more than 80% of the population. Many people suffer from untreated dental problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, infections, and oral cancers. In rural communities and refugee settlements, access to dental care is extremely limited, and awareness about oral hygiene is often low.
Poor oral health can lead to serious complications beyond the mouth, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness, and pregnancy complications. Despite these risks, routine dental visits are rare, and many people only seek treatment during emergencies. In Cox’s Bazar, the widespread habit of chewing betel leaf and betel nut further increases the risk of oral disease.
The Hope Hospital Dental Health Program was created to address these challenges and improve access to essential oral health services for underserved populations.
Community Education and Awareness
Education is a key part of improving oral health. The program conducts community outreach activities to teach individuals and families about proper oral hygiene practices and the importance of preventive dental care.
Workshops and awareness sessions focus on daily brushing habits, preventive care, and the harmful effects of practices such as betel nut chewing. Community health workers also receive training so they can share oral health knowledge within their own communities.
Through these efforts, the program aims to educate and treat at least 1,500 people per year, helping communities develop healthier habits that can prevent dental disease and improve overall well-being.
Expanding Access to Dental Care
Many people in Cox’s Bazar cannot afford dental treatment or live too far from available services. The Hope Hospital Dental Health Program provides free or affordable dental care to individuals who otherwise would not receive treatment.
Services include dental check-ups, fillings, extractions, and treatment for common oral health conditions. Special attention is given to vulnerable populations, including low-income families and Rohingya refugees receiving care through Hope Field Hospital.
The program provides free dental care to at least 500 patients annually, reducing pain, preventing complications, and improving quality of life.
Using Technology to Reach Remote Communities
To ensure long-term access to dental care, the program incorporates telemedicine-based dental consultations. Through phone or video consultations, patients in remote areas are able to connect with dental professionals without needing to travel long distances.
This technology helps provide continuous guidance, follow-up care, and early diagnosis for dental problems. By combining digital solutions with community outreach and clinical services, the program creates a more accessible and sustainable approach to oral healthcare.
Through the Hope Hospital Dental Health Program, Hope Foundation continues its mission of empowering underserved communities and improving health outcomes for families in Cox’s Bazar.
